My methods at The Ostomy Studio are underpinned by the concept of clinical Pilates.

Therapeutic clinical Pilates is the recommended exercise method for anyone with an ostomy. It is a safe and progressive way to rebuild your deep core muscles. It focuses on breathing, core function, pelvic floor control and intra-abdominal pressure management.

Clinical Pilates differs slightly from more traditional methods of Pilates which may be too challenging for many people.

Instead I teach a more progressive, gentle approach, gradually building up each exercise safely. This helps to increase confidence and trust.

The clinical Pilates qualification I hold is a high-level post graduate certification, only open to physiotherapists, clinicians or sport scientists. I’m a certified APPI Clinical Pilates Instructor which is recognised as one of the highest qualifications in the industry.

The exercises I teach in the classes are adapted and appropriate for people with medical and clinical conditions, who may need to progress more slowly or do things differently.

However, this clinical approach can also underpin the progression to more advanced exercises and strength training, ideal for athletes or those who want to be challenged.

In time, some people can progress safely to enjoy challenging high-level exercises including planks, sit ups, weight training and pull ups just as examples. But this process takes time, perseverance and patience, as well as a lifelong commitment to core training.

When we live with a stoma we need to find a the ‘sweet spot’ between respecting the surgery that we’ve had and exercising without fear. It’s a fine balance, but I can help you discover it.
